Mainline Levee Crossings Open

CLARKSDALE, Miss., May 23, 2011 – Recent drops in the water surface elevation along the stretch of mainline levee in Desoto, Tunica and Coahoma Counties have resulted in the following crossings being open to the general public:

 

• Toppers Landing near levee mile 97

• Ward Lake near levee mile 83

• Farrell Crossing near levee mile 80

• Miller Point near levee mile 75

• Duck Lake near levee mile 50

• Seabrook Crossing near levee mile 44

• Tunica Cutoff near levee mile 37

These ramps will be open beginning Monday, May 23, 2011, at noon until 6 p.m. and thereafter from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Signs will be posted on the upstream and downstream side of each crossing prohibiting travel by private vehicles on the mainline levee. All parking will be on the protected side of the levee at each crossing. No parking will be permitted on the river side of the levee.

For the Flood Event of 2011 the following Emergency Declarations were issued due to severe high water on the Mississippi River: the Yazoo Mississippi Delta Levee Board on April 27, 2011, Tunica County on April 25, 2011, Coahoma County on April 29, 2011, the State of Mississippi on April 27, 2011, and the Federal Government on May 4, 2011. This event recorded the highest water elevations at both Memphis and Helena since 1937. As a result of this flood event the Yazoo Mississippi Delta Levee Board closed the mainline Mississippi River levee to all but emergency personnel and vehicles.
