CLARKSDALE, Miss., May 3, 2011 – Although The Yazoo-Mississippi Delta Levee Board has ordered levee access closed in Coahoma, DeSoto and Tunica Counties due to an unusual high water event, Board staff and commissioners are confident in the levee’s ability to withstand extreme conditions.
“Closures of levee access and roads ensure that if emergency action does need to take place, the Board will be able to mobilize equipment and take action quickly,” said Kelly Greenwood, Yazoo-Mississippi Delta Levee Board chief engineer and CEO. “Our levees are in top condition, and we are confident regarding their stability.”
Closing of all access to the Desoto Lake Lots – Highwater Road will be effective Wednesday, May 4. Authorized vehicles only will be allowed on the levee.
“County officials have ordered emergency declarations and mandatory evacuations to protect citizens and to allow crews to go on private property for aid and assessments – not because of any threat to the levees,” Greenwood said. “But we are asking the public to abide by the closure and stay out of the way of this flood fight – for their safety and the safety of others.”
The Board is patrolling the levee 24-hours a day and is on standby to mobilize equipment and take action quickly should the need arise.
